Awesome places..in Syracuse
Its very hot every day. Today is no different. After breakfast which was similar to boarding the Greek ferry but with about 100 elderly Italian women. You had to stand your ground as you stood in line to get your cup of tea or be trampled! Truly!
As the temps were rising quickly Anne & l took off for the Neapolis Archeological site known as one of the world's finest . It was! We asked some strangers about the site . They kindly handed us their own tickets that they had just used . We were speechless with the incredible hand carved rooms! Truly beautiful . Apparently this site was used in the latest Indiana Jones movie.
We walked up many stairs to another amazing theatre and even a full on waterfall at the highest point of the site.
Finally leaving this site we walked to an extremely old church San Giovanni. A Church built in the Byzantine era later Normans later and so on. We were shown down below to another crypt and chapel with the oldest of painting on the walls. The piece de resistance were the catacombs, all 10,000 bodies buried in this underground system, highly organised, spanning a huge area! The temp below was 15, outside 35. It was simply magnificent.
When the catacomb area was needed as an air raid shelter in World War 2, all the bones wer collected and put into one mass grave. They were cleaned out completely.
Rest & relax afternoon.
