The Archimedes Factor
Yesterday was a marathon of walking. We arrived in Syracusa which was once the largest city in the ancient world, relaxed for an hour and a half , then we were off for the next 5 hours in the scotching heat following our learned guide Gabriele. He took us thru the maze of tiny alleyways onto the old town of Ortygia. This was the very first settlement by the Greeks. We passed Roman ruins and an incredible fresh water spring beside the sea..beautiful churches and cathedrals plus a statue of Archimedes who lived here in Syracuse til his death by a Roman soldier.
