Tea For Two

Once we had left from the river lodge, we travelled over 4 hours leaving behind the vast palm oil plantations of the East to the beautiful jungles of the West. The mountain range is incredible. Our destination was Mount Kinabalu the highest mountain in Douth East Indonesia. Before climbing Mount Everest explorers will use this mountain to train,  especially because of the high altitude.

We passed by a huge tea plantation Sabah tea & then went down to the river for a fish spa. I was expecting tiny fish. These were monsters! 40cms long! 100s of them! One woman has bruises all over her legs! They apparently nibbled at your feet. Some fish nipped. One traveller stripped off to his jocks & lay in the river. The fish swam for their lives! Probably thought it was a shark in their waters!

We then checked in to our hotel that gave us a stunning view of Mount
 Kinabalu.I

We toured Brasov  on foot which had once been a fortified town. Its also one of the most charming cities in Transylvania. It displays German architecture  but contains Gothic, Baroque & Renaissance influences. We visited the Black church  (caught in the Great Fire.) We travelled onto Bran & toured the Bran castle  or ( Dracula's castle.) It was overun with people, markets & looked cheap & nasty rather than authentic. In the late afternoon, we reached the famous Peles castle, the Summer residence of the first king of Romania. Incredible & over the top. Many many rooms with most rooms now occupied by private patrons. Onto Bucharest our 2nd last night in Europe.

Day 16: Ljubljana City Tour

Firstly l have no idea why my pics come out sideways. So sorry! It was overcast with a cool breeze. We went on a walking tour with Emil up to the castle on the hill. It's a beautiful  charming clean city. It's the greenest capital. Car traffic in the city centre is restricted. The buildings & bridges are stunning. Cobblestone narrow streets, many bicycles  & low amount of tourists. We walked all over the castle then rode both ways up & down on the funicular. The shops are creatively presented urging you to enter. We had a gin tasting, sat down to a superb mushroom soup, bartered for warmer long jackets & then walked another 4 hours on our way back to the hotel. Our group have taken to meeting for pre dinner drinks where we can. The corridor was the only place! Though l began with a superb Slovenian cake & tea prior to a glass of wine l also managed to fall asleep in the middle of it! ...

Day 8: Albania to Montenegro

Visited Kruje castle and its surrounding township on top of a mountain. Kruje was a fortress of resistance against the Ottoman empire in 15th century. Onto Petrovac Montenegro arriving in torrential rain & flooded paths to the hotel & flooded bridges across to rooms. "Fawlty Towers" it's now known as due to the mould in the rooms. Stench of sewerage in the toilet , curtains that should be hanging, tossed into musty cupboards, very ordinary. Rule is: Don't look up or at your feet, just straight ahead, otherwise you see mould. But its situated on a most beautiful promenade  & bay area filled with bars, restaurants  & eateries of every kind. Sand sun lounges as far as the eye could see.  Anne unfortunately came down with the dreaded gastro/diarrhoea bug going thru the bus. She was ill throughout the night & filled up the waste bin in the toilet with vomit. I had to explain to reception that the bin needed to be emptied. It didn't deaden the smell ...
